The availability of sensors alone does not establish the sustainability maturity of a manufacturing firm. This study proposes a socio-technical model to guide maturity assessment and its use in engineering education in Mexico. It is a conceptual study based on a critical narrative synthesis of fourteen references selected for thematic relevance; it includes neither fieldwork nor a systematic review. The outcome is a five-dimensional framework covering IoT infrastructure, data-driven decision-making, socio-technical alignment, sustainability performance, and readiness for Industry 5.0. Suggested indicators, five indicative maturity levels, and educational activities connect measurement, interpretation, and responsible decisions. The model provides a structure for examining capabilities and outcomes separately. However, its diagnostic and educational usefulness requires empirical validation before it can be used to classify manufacturing firms.
